Whitaker's career evening sinks Nor'easters

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine junior forward Greg Whitaker scored a career-best 28 points on 12-for-16 shooting to give the Huskies their first win of the season, a 85-71 decision over the University of New England in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday evening at Hill Gymnasium.

After starting the season 0-2 over the weekend, USM improved to 1-2, while UNE dropped its season-opener.

Leading by six (34-28) at the half, the Huskies shot a blistering 73.1 percent (19 of 26) in the second frame to pull away.  

Whitaker pulled down 10 rebounds and handed out five assists to cap off a strong performance.  Junior Andy Tracy contributed 21 points and five boards, and sophomore Luke Pollock came off the bench to add 15 points, six boards and four steals.

UNE senior forward Johnnie Jefferson led the Nor'easter scoring attack with 21 points.  He was 9 of 16 from the floor and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.  First-year #J.J. Roseman# was the only other UNE player in double figures with 10 points.

The Nor'easters, who play at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Thursday, were hampered by 22 turnovers.

The Huskies are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Bates College.
