WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team opened up a 3-0 halftime advantage and cruised to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England championship with a 3-1 win over the University of New England on Sunday afternoon.
The Judges, who completed their season with a 13-7-2 record, won the ECAC championship for the second consecutive year.
The Judges took an early 1-0 lead when tournament MVP Melissa Gorenkoff set up Mimi Theodore in the fourth minute.
Brandeis extended its advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute when Gorenkoff notched her eighth goal of the season, then made the score 3-0 just before the half on Alanna Torre's score after a UNE turnover.
UNE prevented a shutout in the 82nd minute when first-year Sarah Richardson scored her fifth goal of the ECAC Tournament off a feed from classmate Maggie Mahoney. Richardson and Mahoney finished the season tied for the team lead in goals scored with 15 each.
After being outshot 13-5 in the first half, the Nor'easters had numerous opportunities in the second and finished with a slim 19-18 edge.
Junior goalkeeper Leigh Engel had seven saves for the Nor'easters, who posted an overall record of 15-6. Those 15 victories represent the highest total since UNE won a school-record 19 contests in 1994.
