BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Commonwealth Coast Conference co-Rookie of the Year Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, Mass.) scored in the 31st minute to give third-seeded University of New England a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Colby-Sawyer College in a quarterfinal round women's soccer playoff game.
Mahoney collected a service from Bethany Augustoni (Montpelier, Vt.) at the top of the box and fired it into the back of the net for her team-leading 15th goal.
UNE (13-4-0) controlled much of the play throughout and finished with a sizeable 22-5 advantage in shots. Senior goalie Christine Quirk (Milford, Conn.) made nine saves for the Chargers (8-9-2) to keep the game close.
Junior Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) needed to make a pair of saves for the Nor'easters, who travel to No. 2 Roger Williams University Tuesday for the semifinal round of the TCCC tournament. The Hawks defeated No. 7 Western New England, 1-0, in double overtime, to advance. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
