BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England rallied from a 24-20 deficit in the second set for a 26-24 win, and went to take a 3-0 victory over Colby College in non-conference women's volleyball action Wednesday evening at the Campus Center.
The win snaps a three-match losing streak for the Nor'easters, who climb over the .500 mark to 10-9. The Mules slip to the .500 mark at 9-9. The victory was UNE's first over Colby in more than 10 years.
Senior
Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.) had a team-high 11 kills to pace the Nor'easters. Junior
Claire Varner (Breckenridge, Mich.) contributed eight kills and 10 digs, while junior
Ellen Choinski (Saunderstown, R.I.) finished with 19 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, senior
Josie Raphaelito (Pine Hill, N.M.) and sophomore
Chelsea Boyle (Cumberland, R.I.) had nine digs apiece.
Colby was paced by first-year Caitlin Burchill (Walpole, Mass.), who had a match-high 14 kills. Classmate Andrea Rosengarten (New York, N.Y.) recorded 10 kills and was 19-for-19 on serves received. Senior Jenny Lawrence (Lafayette, Calif.) served up four aces to make her Colby's career leader in that category.
The Nor'easters head to Eastern Connecticut State University this Friday and Saturday, and the Mules return to play Friday versus Connecticut College.
