BRUNSWICK, Maine -- After playing late into the night yesterday, the University of New England dropped a pair of matches Saturday in second-day play of the Maine Mid-Coast Classic hosted by Bowdoin College.
The Nor'easters lost to Gordon College, 3-1, in their first match before dropping a straight-set (3-0) decision to Rivier College in the afternoon session.
Gordon won with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25. For UNE,
Claire Varner posted yet another double-double with a season-high 20 kills to go with 21 digs. She was also 13-for-13 at the service line.
Alex Toregas contributed nine kills and three total blocks.
Angie Gust,
Chelsea Boyle and
Josie Raphaelito also added solid outings.
In the second match, Rivier was able to avenge a loss earlier in the season to UNE by sweeping with scores of 25-21, 30-28, 25-13.
Ellen Choinski handed out 22 assists and dug out 11 balls. Varner contributed 10 kills and 14 blocks, while Gust was credited with 11 digs and was perfect on all 11 of her service attempts.
The Nor'easters (9-9) will host Colby College on Wednesday at the Campus Center. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
