Nor'easters make it a crazy eight

Eight wins in a row is plenty to cheer about for the Nor'easters' volleyball team

LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of New England volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a 3-1 win over Emmanuel College Friday evening in an opening-round match of the two-day Maine Mid-Coast Classic.

After starting the season 1-6, the Nor'easters (9-6) have reeled off their longest stretch of victories since the 1998 campaign when they also put together an eight-game win streak.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.

Alex Toregas led the way once again with 19 kills and six total blocks.  Kristen Edwards had 11 kills with no attack errors, and Claire Varner chipped in with 10 kills and a team-high 18 digs.

Setter Ellen Choinski played yet another solid match, offering 44 assists, 16 digs and six kills.  Defensively, Josie Raphaelito and Angie Gust combined for 27 digs, while Chelsea Boyle was perfect on each of her 16 serve-receive attempts.

The Nor'easters are scheduled to play their second match of the evening at approximately 9:00 p.m. when they will take on Keene State College.
