BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Dean Smith chased down a long drop-kick in the final minute of double overtime and lofted it over the UNE goalkeeper, giving New England College a 3-2 victory over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Wednesday night.
The Pilgrims improved to 10-5-1 overall with the win, 8-3-2 in TCCC play. NEC will be the fourth seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will host Salve Regina University on Saturday. The Nor'easters finish the season with an overall mark of 4-8-4 (3-7-3 TCCC).
NEC got on the board first on an unassisted goal scored by Peter Koskores, and the Pilgrims carried that lead into the break.
UNE knotted the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute when
Kiel Hiller scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season off an assist from
Eric Goldberg.
The Nor'easters grabbed the lead in the 78th minute on an unassisted goal by
Owen Evans. But the lead only lasted 2:37 before Koskores tallied his second goal of the game, converting a penalty kick.
The teams played through nearly two scoreless overtime periods, before Smith collected the long clear by goalie Jon Mayo and found the back of the net with 48 seconds remaining in the contest.
Mayo made seven saves for the Pilgrims, while his counterpart
Derek Poulin was credited with 10 saves for UNE.
