Bowdoin edges Southern Maine for state championship

CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Four Bowdoin College runners finished in the Top 10 as the Polar Bears came away with an eight-point victory at the 2008 State of Maine Cross Country Championship at Twin Brook Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin recorded a team score of 34 to best second-place University of Southern Maine, which posted a score of 42.  The University of New England Nor'easters finished seventh out of the 10-team field.

Matt Veiga was 18th overall with a time of 27:09.  Dan Kelleher offered his strongest performance of the season with a time of  28:59 over the eight-kilometer loop.

The Nor'easters will compete again Nov. 1 at The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship to be hosted by Western New England College.
