Mahoney, Trafton help Nor'easters storm past Wentworth

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, Mass.) scored four goals and junior midfielder Ali Trafton (Manchester, Maine) matched a school record with four assists, as the University of New England Nor'easters defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 7-0, in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The win was the fifth straight for the Nor'easters, who improve to 9-1 and remain perfect in conference play with a 7-0 mark.  UNE's nine wins is its highest output since the 2000 season.  The Leopards dip to 6-7 overall, 5-3 in TCCC matches.

The combination of Trafton and Mahoney put the game away early.  Trafton set up three consecutive Mahoney goals in the opening 14:34 to give UNE a quick 3-0 advantage.  Sophomore Michelle Epstein (Medway, Mass.) scored in the 24th minute and first-year Katie Caron (Winslow, Maine) tallied less than four minutes before halftime to give the hosts a 5-0 cushion heading into intermission.

Mahoney and Trafton tacked on second-half goals to provide the final margin.  For the match, UNE held a 28-5 advantage in shots.

Junior Leigh Engel (Richmondville, N.Y.) needed three saves to record her third shutout.  Wentworth first-year netminder Katherine Matthews (Northborough, Mass.) turned aside 10 shots.

UNE plays a make-up game Monday when Salve Regina University comes to Biddeford for a 2:00 p.m. start.  The Leopards head to Henniker, N.H. on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. tilt with New England College.
