Strong Second Half Carries Golden Bears over UNE

Tied 0-0 at the half, the Nor'easters dropped a 2-0 decison to regionally-ranked WNEC

Rosa, Garn net goals; WNEC remains unbeaten in TCCC

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Tony Rosa '09 (Ludlow, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie with 24 minutes remaining, and the Western New England College Golden Bears added an insurance goal late for a 2-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears, ranked seventh regionally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll, improve to 6-1-2 overall and 4-0 in TCCC play.  UNE lost its fifth straight to dip to 1-5, 0-3 in league matches.

Play would go back-and-forth for much of the first half, with neither team being able to establish much of an advantage.  WNEC held a narrow 4-1 margin in shots over the opening 45 minutes.

Western New England broke the deadlock when Rosa took a pass from Matt Sullivan '08 (Springfield, Mass.) and slid a low shot to the left of UNE goalkeeper #Derek Poulin# '10 (Scarborough, Maine).  The ball brushed off the goal post and across the goal line, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

WNEC would grab an insurance goal with 45 seconds remaining when Kienan Garn '11 (Lake Huntington, N.Y.) headed the ball into the back of the net for his first collegiate tally.  Ben Wells '08 (Morrisville, Vt.) and Brian Dill '09 (Portland, Conn.) were credited with assists on the play.

Steve Hennessey '08 (Essex Junction, Vt.) was called upon to make just one save in recording his third shutout.

Poulin came up with nine stops for the Nor'easters, who return to action Sept. 27 at Gordon College (3:30 p.m.).

The Golden Bears--unbeaten in their last four matches--host Wesleyan University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
