Stickney powers Nor'easters past Wheelock

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Forward Isaac Stickney '08 (Rumford, Maine) scored 15 of his season-high 24 points in the first half to help the University of New England snap a four-game losing streak with 78-65 non-conference victory over Wheelock College Wednesday evening at the Campus Center.

The Nor'easters improve to 3-4, while the Wildcats--in their first season of varsity competition--drop to 1-6.

After the two teams traded baskets at the outset, UNE would go on a 13-2 run to seize control.  Five different players scored during the spurt, which gave the Nor'easters a 15-4 lead at the 12:56 mark.  The Nor'easters, who would lead the rest of the way, took a 38-29 lead into the break after shooting 53.3 percent (16 of 30) from the field and forcing 13 Wheelock turnovers.

The hosts maintained a double-digit margin for the majority of the second frame, despite the fact the Wildcats made half (15 of 30) of their field goal attempts and limited their turnovers (7 after halftime). 

Stickney was 11 of 15 from the floor, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc.  He grabbed six rebounds, blocked three shots and was credited with three steals.

Jaykyri Simpson '09 (East Cleburne, Texas) played a strong all-around game, scoring 11 points, handing out nine assists and picking up three steals.  Johnnie Jefferson '09 (Dallas, Texas) scored 17 points and added six caroms.

Jarred Lynch '11 (Pawtucket, R.I.), Emilio Matos '11 (Hope, R.I.) and Alex Thayer '11 (Seekonk, Mass.) tallied 12 points apiece for the Wildcats.  Thayer added eight rebounds and three rejections.  Patsy Dinuzzo '11 (Beaver, Pa.) scored 10 points coming off the bench.
