Monks reject Nor'easters to claim first win of the season

St. Joe's blocks 11 shots in a 76-66 win in its home-opener

STANDISH, Maine -- Forward Chris Davis '11 (New York, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, and the St. Joseph's College Monks pulled away in the second half for a 76-66 non-conference men's basketball win over the University of New England Wednesday evening at the Harold Alfond Center.

St. Joe's claimed its first win of the season to improve to 1-2, while the Nor'easters suffered their third consecutive setback to drop to 2-3.  The game was the home-opener for the Monks.

After taking a 34-32 lead into halftime, St. Joseph's pulled away steadily in the second frame and assumed its largest lead (17 points) midway through.  The Monks limited UNE to just 35.5 percent (11 of 31) shooting in the period.

Davis added seven rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots for SJC, which registered a total of 11 blocks on the evening.  Reserve forward Rashon Jones '10 (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 14 points, six boards and three blocks, while Raymond Eatmon '09 (Huntington, N.Y.) contributed 13 points and a team-best eight caroms.  Six-foot-seven center Mitch Ouellet '09 (Fort Kent, Maine) tallied 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

The Monks corraled 19 offensive rebounds and held an overall margin of 44-37 on the backboards.  They also were credited with 14 steals.

Jaykyri Simpson '09 (East Cleburne, Texas) played a strong all-around game for the Nor'easters, scoring a game-high 17 points to go with five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.  Johnnie Jefferson '09 (Dallas, Texas) had a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards, but was held to 6 of 22 shooting from the floor.

UNE will open its home schedule Saturday with a game versus Wentworth Institute of Technology.  Tip time at the Campus Center is 1:00 p.m.
