Women's basketball player Kelly Coleman has been named the UNE Athlete of the Month for January 2013.
Coleman averaged 13.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals over the 12 games in the period, including the last 11 that resulted in Nor'easter victories. She also led Big Blue with a shooting percentage of 78% at the free throw line (45 of 58), was the only player to reach double digits in points for all 12 outings, and had three double-doubles. Additionally, the forward was twice named Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Week, and received the Maine Coaches Association (MWBCA) Player of the Week honor those same two times.
She paced the Nor'easters in scoring during five of the initial seven games in the month, a stretch that featured a career-high 23-point, 11-rebound, and career-high 5-steal performance in a league win against Roger Williams.
Coleman also registered a personal-best 15 rebounds to go with a game-high 17 points in a key road triumph over Endicott. In that match between CCC-unbeatens (at the time), the sophomore tallied seven of UNE's 11 points in the final two minutes of regulation to help rally the Nor'easters from an eight-point deficit to a 63-60 victory.
