Field hockey player Laura Egounis has been named UNE Athlete of the Month for September.
Egounis, a junior from Boscawen, N.H., anchored a Big Blue defensive unit that went a perfect 10-0 during the period -- the longest winning streak in program history. Responsible for breaking up countless fast breaks coming her way, she led the way as UNE limited opponents to 13 shots per game (8 on goal) and 15 total goals against, and posted three shutouts. Egounis was selected Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Defensive Player of the Week in each of the first two weeks of the season (9/6, 9/13) for her efforts.
The defender also contributed on the attack, registering three goals and an assist in the month. Egounis tallied the initial score against Wheaton (2-1) and Framingham State (3-2 OT), and put in the lone goal of the match against Saint Joseph's (1-0) with 3:03 left in regulation.
