Women's swimmer Lizzie Wareham has been chosen UNE Athlete of the Month for February.
After winning two individual events during a dual meet with Saint Joseph's, Wareham led off the 200-yard freestyle relay team with a 50-yard split of 25.12 -- good for qualification to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.
At the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships, she bettered her time in the 50 free (24.89) and set a new school record in the process. Wareham doubled up her accomplishments in the 100-yard butterfly prelims, posting a 1:00.90 that both qualified her for a second ECAC event and bested the previous school mark.
Later in the event finals on day one, the sophomore from Osterville, Mass. trumped her own times of the morning for new school records in the 50 free (24.48) and 100 fly (1:00.11). She finished 2nd and 4th in the races (all-New England honors), respectively. Wareham also swam as part of the 400-yard medley relay squad, which broke and re-broke the prior team mark in an all-New England effort.
Wareham resumed her assault on the UNE record books during the third day of competition, placing an all-New England 3rd in the 100-yard freestyle with a program-best 54.60 -- yet another ECAC qualification.
At the ECAC Championships, she was the only Division III swimmer competing in her events, and finished as an alternate with her time in the 50 free prelims (19th of 74).
