PORTLAND, Maine -- Two duos for the University of New England men's golf team carded under-par rounds at the modified-format Southern Maine Cup (USM), which was played on Saturday (Sep. 5) at Riverside Golf Course.

The specialty event is a break from the traditional collegiate golf scoring model and pairs teammates for an 18-hole round with three sections -- six holes of best ball, six holes of best ball after a scramble tee shot, and six holes of scramble.

The tandem of Owen Lee and Noah Fay tied for sixth place out of 15 groups with a two-under 70, while Sean Guerrette and Sean Zerega came in with 71. Tim Melley and Hunter Bruce wound up with 77.

"I am very pleased with the focus and effort that our men put forth today in our opening tournament," shared head coach Kasey Keenan. "Owen and Noah put themselves in great spots on the course all day, and most importantly for me was that they competed until the end. Sean Guerrette's 40-yard hole-out for eagle on the par 4 8th hole was a nice highlight. He and first-year Sean Zerega had it going after that, playing the final 10 holes at level par."

"Can't wait to keep pushing this group this coming week. I feel like we are really close to taking that next big step as a collective, and we are going to keep putting in the focused and determined time on the course to get there," Keenan added.

The best rounds of the afternoon, at 64, belonged to USM's Ben Aucoin and Jaden Poirier, and Will Farschon and Carter O'Connell.

UNE resumes normal tournament play on Wednesday at the John Queenan Memorial hosted by Saint Joseph's College at Point Sebago Golf Club.
