BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Ella Reeves netted the lone goal in the 2nd period and was part of a defensive unit that kept Wellesley College off of the board, as the University of New England field hockey team secured a 1-0 victory at Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday evening (Sep. 22).
The second straight win has the Nor'easters at 3-4 overall, and now 6-3 all-time against the Blue (1-6). The last four meetings, and five of six, have been decided by one score.
The clean sheet was the first of the season for UNE and rookie goalkeeper
Riley Curtin, who recorded three saves in the second half. After just one shot attempt and one penalty corner during the initial 30 minutes, Wellesley amassed sizable margins in shots (9-0) and corners (7-1) in the 3rd frame, but only two tries put Curtin into action.
The Nor'easters were able to find more possession in the 4th to limit the total chances on the back end and seal the win.
"Our defense came up strong today, especially on penalty corners," said UNE head coach Danielle Collins. "We supported each other in pressure moments and strung together a bunch of really nice passing sequences, both to clear the zone, and some that led to quality attacking opportunities for us.
The hosts converted on their third corner and fourth shot of the first half when Reeves slotted her second goal of the year in between legs and sticks and into the right side of the cage from the top of the circle.
Isabel Culver and
Kate Kelso assisted on the play.
