CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine --
Abby Flanagan and
Amanda Forziati guided the University of New England women's golf team to its third title in as many events on Sunday (Sep. 20), as the Nor'easters captured the six-team, darkness-shortened Southern Maine Community College Invitational at the Purpoodock Club.
Lack of daylight led to some players not completing their round, so the scoring format was adjusted to count only 16 holes per competitor, and just three individuals per team. UNE's total landed at 231 (72, 73, 86), which was 16 better than the host Seawolves (247=72, 76, 99). Gordon College was third at 258.
The solo portion was decided by the 18-hole scores that finished, leaving Flanagan and SMCC's Grace Thompson knotted at 82 on the par 73 track. Forziati was one back (83) in third place, three clear of SMCC's Charlotte Blanchard.
Brooke Ingram came in with 97 (86) to wrap the UNE score.
"It was a pleasure for our women to have the opportunity to play Purpoodock. The weather made it difficult at times, but I feel we took a step forward today," said UNE head coach Kasey Keenan. "Both Amanda and Abby continued their solid, consistent play from tee to green. Brooke closed out the front side with a fantastic birdie on the par-3 9th hole, and Danielle and Neave also swung the club well on the first nine."
The Nor'easters head to Gordon's Hampton Beach Invitational next Saturday.
