BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Maya Brochu and Marina Violette of the University of New England women's cross country team wound up fractionally outside of the top 10 among a field of 151 runners at the Maine Championship, which was run on the campus of Bowdoin College on Saturday (Sep. 19). The Nor'easters took 5th place in the event as a group.

Division I University of Maine accounted for the first three runners and notched a score of 19 to headline the 11 institutions; Evelyn Wool of the Black Bears paced the competitors with a 6K time of 21:17.

Bates College (63), Bowdoin (83), and Colby College (108) were the others in front of UNE (127), which was comfortably ahead of the University of Southern Maine (183).

"The women competed well today against some very strong teams," UNE head coach Kourtney Bonsey shared. "I was happy to see that the training they've been putting in translated to racing. Marina made a big statement in her first-ever 6K, and is proving to be a great number two runner for us right now."

Brochu was less than three seconds away from eighth, placing 11th with a time of 21:58. Violette was next in line, clocking 22:00.

Sylvie DiBartolomeo (43rd; 22:58), Sky Anderson (69th; 24:12), and Mae Butler (71st; 24:21) rounded out the team score for the Nor'easters.

UNE is back in action on October 3 at the Keene State College Invitational.
