BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's tennis team fought off a stiff challenge by Western New England University to earn a 6-1 Conference of New England win Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3) at Blue Cyclone Complex.

In clash that was much closer than the final score indicates, the Nor'easters (7-3, 2-3 CNE) grabbed the initial point of the day with a pair of doubles triumphs. Andie Lamontagne and Sofia Salcedo Ladaga earned a 6-4 win at the #2 spot, followed by a 7-5 victory by Madeline Frank and Nora Hill at the #1 position.

UNE continued its winning ways in singles play, starting with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Hill at #2. Grace Catalano followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the #4 position, and then Lamontagne posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the #3 spot to clinch the match.

Salcedo Ladaga overcame a first-set shortcoming to rally for a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) win at #5 singles, and Alyssa Fritschka (#6) earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

"Today was a really great effort by our team," shared UNE head coach Adam Reeb. " I'm proud of the way we finished doubles and got the point by being aggressive at the net. We knew we had to stay strong and fight hard in the singles, and we did that against a tough opponent. This was a good day for our team and should give us some confidence moving forward."

Emma Miller picked up the lone point for the Golden Bears (3-5, 2-4).

UNE heads back to the courts Wednesday (Oct. 7) with a conference date versus Suffolk University. The match is scheduled to be played at Belmont Hill School in Belmont, Mass.
