LEWISTON, Maine -- Elsa Copeland netted her second and third goals less than three minutes after halftime to open up a 1-0 cushion, as No.21 Bates College stretched the advantage into a 6-0 result over the University of New England field hockey team in the rain Tuesday night (Oct. 13) at Campus Avenue Field.
During the opening 30 minutes, the Bobcats (8-3) had 11 of the game's 12 shots and both penalty corners, and netted their lone score off the stick of Copeland in the 12th minute. UNE's only shot was on target, but a defensive save from Haley Dwight kept the visitors scoreless.
Copeland gave the hosts some breathing room in the 31st and 33rd minutes, before Bella Bigelow, Dwight, and Sophie O'Sullivan padded the lead in the 4th period. Ava Donahue did not have to make a stop to collect the shutout, which was the fourth straight by Bates.
For the Nor'easters (6-7),
Riley Curtin made five saves in 36 minutes of work, and
Maia Cote logged three the rest of the way.
UNE has a day of rest before heading on the road to face current No.1 and reigning national champion Tufts University on Thursday.
