KEENE, N.H. -- For the second consecutive year,
Mic Hujus was second-to-none in the final standings at the Keene State College Sprint Pentathlon, as the University of New England women's swimming team opened the 2026-27 season at Spaulding Pool on Saturday (Oct. 10).
The non-scoring competition included the 50-yard version of all swimming disciplines, plus the 100-individual medley and two relays. Forty-six individuals from five different institutions logged times in all five events to land on the overall leaderboard.
Hujus clocked a cumulative time of 3:00.51, which was more than one second better than her time from last year, when the margin was almost four seconds ahead of the next fastest swimmer. On Saturday, she extended that gap to almost six seconds. Separately, Hujus won the 50-butterfly (27.34), 50-backstroke (29.21), 50-freestyle (25.15), and 100-IM (1:03.67) -- with margins of 0.79, 1.47, 1.21, and 1.25, and a refresh of three of her own meet records.
The Nor'easters had four of the top seven overall times, with
Payton Walmsley in 3rd (3:09.83),
Emily Gilliam in 6th (3:16.25), and
Tess Zurawski in 7th (3:21.01). Walmsley was similarly third as a first-year, before she and Gilliam were studying abroad last fall.
Walmsley took second place in the 50-breaststroke (32.84) -- just 0.06 off the lead pace -- and was third in the 100-IM (1:06.93). Gilliam finished third in the 50-breast (33.38), and Zurawski ended up fourth in the 50-back (31.54).
Hujus, Gilliam,
Lucy Poole, and Walmsley teamed up to snag 2nd in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.91. UNE was ahead of its meet record pace from 2025, but the group from Gordon College touched the wall 0.13 seconds sooner.
The Nor'easters will now have a couple of weeks to prepare for a dual meet at Saint Joseph's College on October 23.
