CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) field hockey team received a goal in the first and third quarters to take a 2-0 decision over the University of New England in a non-conference match played Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6) at Jack Barry Field.
The 19th-ranked Engineers (2-2) struck late in the first frame to open the scoring when Meredith Wu converted a feed from Jane Tortorella to make the score 1-0.
Neither team was able to find the cage in the second, as MIT held the visiting Nor'easters without a shot in the opening half to take 1-0 advantage into intermission.
The Engineers got an insurance goal with 9:22 elapsed in the third quarter with Audrey Oh setting up Janie Thomas.
UNE was able to mount some offense after halftime, finishing with a total of four shots in a contest where opportunities were tough to come by (just 15 total shots). MIT held an 11-4 advantage in shots and 7-2 margin in penalty corners.
Maeve Zimmer earned the shutout with three saves, while counterpart
Savanna Harvey totaled five for the Nor'easters.
UNE (1-3) will look to snap a three-game losing skid Tuesday (Sept. 9) when it hosts Colby College at 6 p.m. at Blue Bolt Field.
