BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England displayed total dominance in its inaugural women's tennis match on Saturday (Aug. 30), as the Nor'easters christened the new Blue Cyclone Complex by surrendering only eight games en route to a 7-0 win over Vermont State University-Johnson.
UNE's 20th varsity sport will have a 17-match fall schedule, which includes 10 Conference of New England (CNE) battles ahead of the league championship in late October.
The Nor'easters (1-0) were up one point from the jump, with a forfeit at #6 singles, and quickly padded the cushion by claiming the one doubles point.
Madeline Frank and
Nora Hill teamed up at #1 while
Zoe Lambke and
Olivia Crooker paired at #2, and both breezed to 6-0 wins.
Frank made it 3-0 with a positive result at #1 singles (6-1, 6-0), and Crooker provided the deciding point at #5 (6-0, 6-2). Hill at #2 (6-1, 6-1) followed in short order, and
Alyssa Fritschka at #4 was the lone UNE individual to win both sets at love (6-0, 6-0).
Sydney Pelletier -- the team captain, who started a few minutes later than all the others -- then had the stage to herself at the end and capped things at #3 to seal the shutout (6-2, 6-1).
UNE is back in action next Saturday (1 p.m.), taking on Lesley University at Blue Cyclone Complex.
