BOSTON – 10 first-half goals helped the University of New England women's lacrosse team run away with a 15-4 win over Wentworth – its second straight Conference of New England victory - on Tuesday evening at Sweeney Field.
Leading 2-1 midway through the opening quarter, the Nor'easters (4-6, 2-1 CNE) closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 10-1 lead into the break. UNE boasted eight different goal scorers, led by
Barrie Guertin's four.
Sydney Balotin, in addition to her game-high six draw controls, scored three goals for UNE, including one from distance to beat the horn at the end of the third quarter.
Chloe Ryan notched a career-high four assists.
Shayleah Gunning-Lav accounted for two of Wentworth's four goals. The Leopards (4-6, 0-3 CNE) were nearly even with the Nor'easters in groundballs (22-21) but were outdone, 18-3, in draw controls and committed 31 turnovers to UNE's 24.
Kimmy Staniar was part of the Nor'easters' defensive success with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Balotin's first goal of the game kicked off UNE's 8-0 first-half run, which also included two tallies from
Ella Cloutier.
Paige DeVries and
Izzy Broschk both scored in the final two minutes of the second quarter to cap off the dominant stretch.
A 4-0 run – half of those goals scored by Guertin – spanned the end of the third quarter and the majority of the fourth, and allowed the Nor'easters to grab their largest lead of the night, 15-3.
With consecutive 11-goal victories to its credit, UNE is back in action at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday, April 5 to host Nichols at 4 p.m.
