SOMERVILLE, Mass. --
Sarah LaVita began the outdoor season with a strong performance, winning the discus and javelin to help lead the University of New England women's track & field team to 3rd place in a field of 20 institutions at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic on Saturday (Mar. 29) at the Dussault Track.
The Nor'easters totaled 56.5 points to wind up behind the host Jumbos (237) and Suffolk University (60.83). Wellesley College (55) and Smith College (44) rounded out the top five.
LaVita -- UNE's school record holder in both events -- launched the second-longest throw of her career in the discus at 35.52m, while the 35.08m distance in the javelin was good enough for her to qualify for the 2025 New England Championships in that event.
Kelsee Gladu also booked a spot in the postseason regional by registering a 39:39.58 (4th) in the 10,000 race.
Adding to the UNE total with high throwing finishes were
Cheyenne Cahill in the shot put (2nd; 10.74m),
Kassidy Plummer in the discus (3rd; 32.02m), and
Emma Mini in the shot put (5th; 9.98m).
Rookie
Julia Chase cleared 1.46m (5th) in the high jump to become the second-best Nor'easter in program records. She also took 4th in the triple jump with 9.96m.
UNE is slated to participate at Gordon College's Jon Tymann Invitational next Saturday, and then the University of Hartford's Rage in the Cage Invitational on Sunday (Apr.6).
