Nor'easters drop CNE opener to Endicott

Statistics

BEVERLY, Mass. -- Endicott College raced out to an 11-0 lead halfway through the second quarter and never looked back on its way to a 19-5 Conference of New England win over the University of New England in a mutual league-opening women's lacrosse match Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 26) at Hempstead Stadium.

Bailey Sheehan tallied all of her game-high four goals in that initial spurt to lead the way for the Gulls (5-3, 1-0 CNE). Sheehan also finished with three assists to pace all players with seven points. Clare Wendell, Mia Smith and Leah Black each contributed three goals to the Endicott attack, while Grace McAfee and Mia Samarjian chipped in three points apiece with a goal and two helpers.

Leading 12-2 at intermission, the Gulls outscored UNE 3-1 in the third quarter to trigger running time the rest of the way. Payton Quirk turned aside seven shots to earn the victory in goal. Kaitlyn DiLoreto played a strong all-around contest for the hosts, racking up five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Sydney Balotin was the lone repeat scorer for the Nor'easters, finishing with a pair of tallies. Morgan White, Chloe Ryan and Ella Cloutier rounded out the UNE scoring with a marker each.

Balotin led all players with six draw controls, and Barrie Guertin added four. Goalkeeper Jenna Trafford made five saves in goal for the Nor'easters (2-6, 0-1).

The two squads were even in draws (13-13), but Endicott held a decided advantage in both shots (37-19) and ground balls (24-11).

The Nor'easters' next game will be Friday (Mar. 28) versus Western New England University in a contest originally scheduled for Saturday. Opening draw at Blue Bolt Field is slated for 7:30 p.m.
