BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine out-scored the University of New England by eight in the middle periods and picked up a 20-11 women's lacrosse result to begin the 2025 season on Tuesday (Feb. 25) at Blue Bolt Field.
Things were knotted at 2-2 in the latter stages of the 1st quarter when the Huskies (1-0) netted six straight across 13 minutes. Katelyn D'Appolonia tallied the first four of her game-high five goals in the span. The margin was 11-4 at the break.
The Nor'easters (0-1) were hanging around in the 3rd, at 12-7, but D'Appolonia sparked a 5-0 spurt by five different players that left USM up by 10 through 45 minutes.
D'Appolonia also added two assist to her match-bests of seven draw controls and four caused turnovers for the visitors. Southern Maine received four goals and three assists out of Maddie Kinney, another four markers from Cierra Hill, and six ground balls into the stick of Britney Hill. Lydia Laslavic had five stops defending the cage.
UNE was paced by
Morgan White with four goals, and two apiece from
Sydney Balotin and
Emma Collingwood. The Nor'easters held the edge in draws, with 15 of their 19 secured by White (6), Balotin (5), and
Izzy Broschk, who also contributed a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut.
Jenna Trafford put up seven saves.
Next up for UNE will be a road trip to Bridgewater State University on Friday.
