EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- First-year goaltender
Kyleigh Matola had 33 saves as the University of New England shut out Suffolk University, 4-0, in a Conference of New England women's ice hockey game played Friday evening (Dec. 5) at Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink.
The reigning CNE Rookie of the Week, Matola turned aside 12 shots in both the second and third periods to help keep the Rams off the scoreboard and register her first career shutout.
Averi Curran and
Lainie Lemieux scored less than two minutes apart early in the first period as the Nor'easters seized control from the outset.
Amanda Forziati and
Mackenzie O'Leary were each credited with an assist on both tallies.
After a scoreless middle period, UNE salted the game away in the final frame.
Madeline Hill scored an unassisted goal at 7:04, and
Kaylen Taddia followed at the 13:40 mark.
Grace Flannery and
Jenna Kirch set up Taddia's goal.
The Nor'easters (4-6-0, 2-3-1 CNE) were able to kill off a five-minute penalty late in the third to help preserve the clean sheet for Matola.
Forziati had five of UNE's 17 blocked shots on the evening. Reigning CNE Player of the Week
Jamie DuPont was a menace at the face-off dot, winning 13 of 16.
Katelyn Michals recorded 30 stops for Suffolk, which dropped to 4-3-1 overall (4-2-1 CNE).
The same two squads have less than 24 hours off before taking the ice again tomorrow in Biddeford. Puck drop at the Harold Alfond Forum is slated for 4 p.m.
