WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Maddie Pope and Mikayla Mrzyka scored goals in the opening 23 minutes of the contest to give Western New England University a lead it would never relinquish in a 2-1 victory over the University of New England in a Conference of New England women's ice hockey game Saturday evening (Nov. 8) at Olympia Ice Center.
The triumph completed a sweep of the weekend series for the Golden Bears, who improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The game was scoreless until Pope converted on the power play midway through the first period. Ava Camelio and Jenna Lynch were credited with assists on Pope's third tally in less than 24 hours.
Pope and Lynch set up Mrzyka for WNEU's second power-play goal of the evening, which came 2:13 into the second period.
Lainie Lemieux got the Nor'easters into the scoring column, collecting a failed Golden Bear clearing attempt and converting a shot from the right circle at the 7:51 mark of the final frame.
Mackenzie O'Leary and
Keely Kasputis assisted on the play.
UNE was unable to notch the equalizer the rest of the way.
Jamie DuPont won 14 of 25 face-offs for the Nor'easters, while
Jamie Ryan blocked a team-best five shots. Goaltender
Kyleigh Matola finished with 28 saves.
UNE (1-3, 0-2 CNE) returns to action Friday, Nov. 14 when Curry College comes to Biddeford for a 4 p.m. conference showdown.
