HOLDERNESS, N.H. -- Trailing by a couple after 20 minutes, the No.9 University of New England men's ice hockey team rattled off the next six goals to defeat Plymouth State University by a 6-3 margin in the mutual season opener on Friday evening (Oct. 31) at Hanaway Rink.
The Nor'easters (1-0) struck four times over a span of 12 minutes in the 2nd period to get on track, and then received the second goal of the contest from
Dominic Murphy just 12 seconds into the 3rd to make it a 5-2 game.
Scores by Kim Hilmersson and Will Redick had the Panthers (0-1) in front through five minutes of action, and the hosts doubled-up UNE in shots during the initial session, 10-5.
Jayden Price started visitors back at 1:12 of the middle frame, before
Chip Hamlett (7:20), Murphy (9:42), and
Ryan Hadland (11:35) factored in the complete 180 on the scoreboard.
Drew Olivieri and
Kevin O'Keefe each picked up their second assists of the night on Murphy's tally in the final stanza.
Noah Szretter capped the scoring for the Nor'easters with a few minutes left to play.
Transfer goalie
Harrison Chesney logged 22 saves for UNE to backstop the victory, as the Nor'easters improve to 6-2-1 all-time against PSU.
Nathan Chickering, who assisted on Price's goal, also aided the defensive effort with three blocked shots.
The Nor'easters collected 14 faceoff wins from Olivieri, while Hadland chipped in with seven in nine tries. Hadland was also good for an assist on Hamlett marker -- the fourth UNE player with a multi-point performance.Â
With 61 seconds remaining, Matt Hale added one score for the Panthers, who got a combined 18 saves out of Brandon Shantz and Connor Strobel.
UNE begins Conference of New England (CNE) play next Friday with a road trip to No.4 Curry College.
