EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- Trailing 1-0 after one period, the University of New England received goals from
Hannah Keating and
Jamie DuPont in the middle frame to rally for a 2-1 Conference of New England (CNE) road win over Suffolk University in women's ice hockey action Friday evening (Jan. 31).
The win lifted the Nor'easters (8-9-1, 6-5-1 CNE) into second place in the conference standings with 19 points and was also UNE's second one-goal triumph over Suffolk after topping the Rams, 4-3, back on Nov. 26.
After a power-play goal by Cassie Borowski late in the opening period had given the Rams the lead heading into first intermission, UNE responded early in the second to take control. The Nor'easters drew even at 3:54 of the second when Keating re-directed a shot from the left circle by
Averi Curran. DuPont was credited with a secondary assist on the play. With UNE on the power play, DuPont would notch the game-winner midway through the period, snapping home a wrist shot home from the top of the left circle after the Nor'easters had won an offensive-zone face-off.
Jamie Ryan and
Eliana Kane assisted on DuPont's first goal of the season.
The visitors made the one-goal margin stand up, with winning goaltender
Kirsten DiCicco making 12 of her 36 saves in the third period. Several of those stops came after the Rams had pulled goaltender Katlyn Michals with just under two minutes remaining.
Michals stopped 26 shots for Suffolk, which dropped below the .500 mark at 8-9-1 (6-5-1 CNE).
The same two squads have less than 24 hours of rest before taking the ice at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford tomorrow at 4 p.m.
