HARRISVILLE, R.I. --
Averi Curran scored an early third-period goal to provide the offense, and goaltender
Danielle DeJon came up with 29 saves to give the University of New England women's ice hockey team a 1-0 Conference of New England (CNE) road win over Nichols College Friday evening (Jan. 17) at Levy Rink.
After two scoreless periods UNE (7-7-0, 5-3-0 CNE) struck just 1:18 into the third when Curran stuffed home her own rebound from the left doorstep. The scoring play started when
Lainie Lemieux was a face-off from the right circle.
Adria Tebo scooped up the puck and had consecutive shots blocked before Curran came up with the game-winner after her initial offering was stopped by Nichols goaltender McKenzie Muir.
A transfer from Merrimack College, DeJon's 29-save performance came in her first appearance in a UNE uniform. She was tested early, recording more than half (15) her saves in the opening period. DeJon came up with eight stops in the final frame to keep Nichols off the scoreboard and preserve the shutout. The Bison suffered their sixth consecutive setback to drop to 5-10-0 overall and 2-6-0 in conference play.
The Nor'easters' defense was stout in front of DeJon, totaling 25 blocked shots, including a game-high six by
Eliana Kane.
The same two teams will face one another tomorrow evening, when UNE's 9th Annual Teddy Bear Toss game is played at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
