PORTLAND, Maine -- The University of New England men's golf squad finished 2nd out of four teams on Saturday (Sep. 7) at the modified-format Southern Maine Cup (USM), which was held at the par-72 Riverside Golf Course.
The competition deviates from the traditional collegiate golf scoring system and links two teammates for an 18-hole round with three sections -- six holes of scramble format, six holes of alternate shot, and six holes of best ball. All three pairs count towards the overall institution total.
The host Huskies accounted for the three best rounds of the day -- including a 7-under 65 from Elwood Moore and Jackson Horne -- to win with a score of 199. UNE (223), Saint Joseph's College of Maine (227), and the University of Maine-Farmington (238) filled out the field.
The Nor'easters received an even-par 72 from
Sean Guerrette and
Hank Hannan to lead the way.
Tyler Politano and
Aidan Fontaine combined to shoot 75, while
Ben Donahue and
Tim Melley carded a 76.
UNE has a full week until its next action -- the UMF Invitational at Waterville Country Club (Sep. 14).
