MANCHESTER, Maine -- Fueled by rounds of 71 and 72 from
Ben Donahue and
Trevor Flanagan, the University of New England claimed 2nd place from a field of nine institutions with a score of 312 on Tuesday (Sep. 24) in the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Invitational at Augusta Country Club.
The event and course have been good to the Nor'easters since first attending in 2013, now with five top-3 finishes in eight visits, including the victory in 2021. Following up winner Husson University (293), UNE and Colby College (313) were the only other squads to shoot below 326.
For Donahue, playing in his 11th collegiate competition round, the 71 was a personal best by eight strokes. In program records, the raw total matches the fourth-lowest recorded number, while the 1-over-par mark shares fifth. Donahue made three birdies and tied for 2nd on the day, one off the even-par standard set by Jace Cook of Husson (70) among the field of 45 individuals.
Flanagan's 72 was his lowest in 13 rounds sporting the UNE logo, and goes down as the lowest gross score ever by a Nor'easter who did not pace the team during an 18-hole round. He also had three birdies.
Together, Donahue and Flanagan -- at 143 and 3-over-par -- now hold a piece of second in school history for duos on a single day of competition. Owen Lennon and Chris Brewer (139 and 3-under) haven't relinquished the top spots since setting them in 2002.
The Nor'easters received an 80 from
Sean Guerrette and
Tyler Politano added 89 to complete the team score.
UNE heads to Brunswick Golf Club and the two-day Bowdoin College Invitational this weekend.
