SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --
Nina Parziale claimed the bronze medal in the 10,000 meter race to lead seven University of New England women's track & field qualifiers competing at the 2024 Division III New England Track & Field Championships, which wrapped up day two on Saturday (May 4) at Mount Holyoke College.
Parziale lowered their own program record by nearly 15 seconds to 36:50.59 in the event. It was the first-ever podium performance by a Nor'easter athlete at the meet.
UNE also received a pair of school records and four other personal bests from
Izabella Haagenson in the heptathlon on the way to scoring 210 points higher (3,327) than her first try in the seven-part challenge a few weeks earlier. In the 100m hurdles, Haagenson clocked 17.08 seconds to better her Nor'easter record (by 0.09), and she tied the long jump standard with 4.96 meters (0.16m more than her previous best). She also improved on her personal bests in the 200m (28.44), 800m (2:46.93), high jump (1.34m), and the javelin (21.96).
Posting top-10 finishes were
Sarah LaVita and
Kelsee Gladu. -- LaVita (7th) with a season-best 36.85 meters in the javelin throw, and Gladu (8th) with a personal-best 38:16.21 in the 10,000m race.
In the past two years at the championship, UNE had not logged a place better than ninth.
