BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Behind 22 points from
Griffin Chaffin-Quiray, the University of New England women's rugby team made it to the title match of the Polar Bear 7s at Pickard Field on the campus of Bowdoin College. The Nor'easters picked up two wins out of three contests during the round robin before a 19-10 setback to Norwich University in the final.
Six different players contributed points in the opening match of the day against the host Polar Bears, as UNE posted a 27-0 victory. In addition to Chaffin-Quiray,
Sara Kraus,
Mackayla O'Meara,
Celeste Valerio, and
Hannah Ramalho supplied tries, while
Rae Pesek added a conversion.
Chaffin-Quiray accounted for the lone score in a 20-5 loss to Norwich, and then the Nor'easters racked up a 37-7 triumph over New England College in their third match. Valerio and Ramalho tallied two tries apiece, with one each from
Liz Cogan and
Kim Savery. Chaffin-Quiray had the other, as well as one conversion.
In the championship with the Cadets, Chaffin-Quiray and Cogan provided the offense.
