BRUNSWICK, Maine --
Sarah LaVita qualified for a pair of postseason events to lead the University of New England women's track & field team during the Maine Pine Tree Classic, as day two wrapped up on Saturday (Apr. 20) at the Magee-Samuelson Track.
LaVita achieved a New England Championships mark in the javelin on two throws, the second measuring 35.79 meters. All but one of the six attempts exceeded her season best entering the competition, and she ended up placing second in the event.
The sophomore then shattered her own school record in the discus (34.45) by launching it 36.69 meters to reach another standard for the NE Championships. The distance was good for third place on the day.
Olivia Chase established a new program record in the hammer throw for a third time this season, with an effort measuring nearly one meter more than last week (40.41m) -- and after the previous throw traveled 39.75 for a temporary record.
Sienna Matregrano recorded personal bests in the javelin (30.90m) and hammer (36.45m), and took third place in the javelin.
Sophia King and
Izabella Haagenson both went below King's previous school mark of 17.92 seconds in the 100m hurdles, with 17.82 and 17.86, respectively. In the 400m hurdles, Haagenson finished fourth place with a season-low time of 1:12.00 -- the fourth fastest in program history (all hers).
Eden Morris was fourth in the triple jump (9.85m) and fifth in the long jump (4.82m); the long jump was the sophomore's best at UNE.
The Nor'easters will now prepare for the 2024 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Track & Field Championships, which begin Thursday (steeplechase) at Gordon College before moving to Portsmouth High School in Rhode Island on Friday afternoon and Saturday.
