STANDISH, Maine --
Olivia Chase bettered her school record in the hammer throw and took 1st place as the throwers from the University of New England women's track & field team, plus the program's first heptathlon competitor, participated at the two-day Monks Invitational hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine which concluded on Sunday (Apr. 14).
For the second time this season, Chase established a new Nor'easter standard in the hammer with a distance of 39.50 meters -- nearly one meter further than her mark at the start of the year.
Izabella Haagenson finished 2nd out of four in the heptathlon with a score of 3,117 points. She had the high performance of the group in the shot put (8.02m) and notched a personal-best in one of her regular events, the long jump (4.80m). In the other five disciplines, Haagenson posted 18.36 seconds in the 100m hurdles, 29.02 seconds in the 200m, 2:49.13 in the 800m, 1.30 meters in the high jump, and 21.81 meters in the javelin.
Sarah LaVita placed 2nd in the javelin (33.89m), 3rd in the discus throw (33.07m), and had a personal-long of 9.95 meters in the shot put. UNE's leader in the shot put was
Cheyenne Cahill at 11.00 meters in 3rd place.
The entire roster of throwers had their top individual performances in the hammer, following Chase. Entering the day, Chase had been the only one to ever surpass 33 meters, doing so 14 times; on Sunday, after five more by Chase, four others joined the club, including
Sienna Matregrano (twice; long of 35.18m),
Megan Burns (34.08m),
Kassidy Plummer (33.47m), and LaVita (33.02m).
The full squad is back together next Friday and Saturday on the campus of Bowdoin College for the Maine Championships.
