#12 UNE halts skid with 5-1 win over Wentworth

EVERETT, Mass. -- Juraj Elias scored a pair of power-play goals to help the 12th-ranked University of New England men's ice hockey team come away with a 5-1 road win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) at Allied Veterans Rink.

After dropping its last three contests, UNE improved to 14-5-3 overall and 8-4-3 in conference action. The Leopards, who had taken a 3-2 win over the Nor'easters one night before in Biddeford, fell to 9-12-1 (5-9-1).

Rookie Drew Olivieri got the Nor'easters on the scoreboard with the lone goal of the opening period. Olivieri's first collegiate tally came at the 16:01 mark.

UNE broke the game open in the second with goals from Ryan Hadland, Elias and Dylan Schuett. After a scoreless initial 10 minutes of the frame, the trio of strikes came within a span of 5:29.

The host Leopards got into the scoring column just 2:10 into the third period when Desmond Johnson converted assists from George Weiner and Jacob Shankar.

Elias tacked on the final goal of the afternoon with just under five minutes remaining and UNE on a power play.

Mike Tersoni, Kevin O'Keefe, Chip Hamlett and Nathan Chickering were each credited with a pair of assists, while Ryan Kuzmich and Carter Casper had one.

Winning goaltender Billy Girard IV finished with 19 saves for the Nor'easters, who will return to action next Friday (Feb. 9) when they host rival Endicott College at 7 p.m.

The result also marked victory number 150 at UNE for 9th-year head coach Kevin Swallow (150-54-19).

Jack McGovern turned aside 26 shots for Wentworth.
