MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- The University of New England women's ice hockey team received goals from three different players to claim a 3-0 road win over Salve Regina University in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Friday night (Feb. 16) at St. George's Rink.
The win ensured the Nor'easters (10-11-3, 9-5-3 CCC) will be seeded no lower than third for the upcoming conference tournament, while the Seahawks sit in fifth place with a CCC mark of 7-9-1 (10-11-3 overall).
UNE took advantage of a Salve Regina turnover in its defensive zone to get on the scoreboard at 14:45 of the opening period.
Amanda Forziati controlled the puck from behind the Seahawk cage before finding
Anna O'Neill, who knocked in the puck from close range.
Lainie Lemieux was credited with a secondary assist.
The Nor'easters would pull away in the second period with goals from
Jamie Ryan and
Mia LaPlante. The same tandem of Forziati and Lemieux assisted on Ryan's tally, which came with 6:02 elapsed in the frame. LaPlante offered a strong individual effort for the Nor'easters' third goal less than two minutes later, maneuvering between several Salve Regina defenders from behind the cage. Her initial shot on goal was stopped, but LaPlante stuffed home the rebound.
Kelly McCarthy and
Hannah Humes set-up LaPlante's goal.
Delanie Corcoran backstopped the win by making 22 saves to register her fifth shutout of the season.
Ellee Kopecky came up with 32 stops for the Seahawks.
UNE will conclude its regular season tomorrow evening at 7 p.m., hosting Western New England University on Senior Night at the Harold Alfond Forum. A regulation win for the Nor'easters would lift them into second place for the CCC Tournament, which gets underway Wednesday with the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds facing off in a first-round game. The Golden Bears currently sit in second place with 34 points, while UNE sits third with 31.5 points.
