BRISTOL, R.I. -- Abigail Stevens [CNE 1st Team] drove home a penalty corner insert 2:54 into overtime to lift No.2 Roger Williams University past No.4 University of New England, 2-1, in the final of the 2024 Conference of New England (CNE) Field Hockey Championship on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) at Bayside Field.
The only shot of the extra session was initiated by Chelsea King [CNE 1st Team] and sent directly to the top of circle, where Stevens stepped inside and found the right side of the cage for the sudden-victory result. The Hawks (16-6) capture their first-ever conference crown -- now in year 12 of the program -- and earn the CNE's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
The Nor'easters -- who were in search of UNE's seventh league championship and making a 12th appearance in the title match -- conclude the season with a 9-12 record. Saturday was the sixth time one of UNE's battles for the berth went to OT; three more have been decided by one in regulation. Under 11th-year head coach
Danielle Collins, Big Blue has played for the AQ 10 times.
Quality shots were at a premium all day, as only 10 total tries were on target (RWU 7-3). The Hawks were creating chances early, though, racking up two-thirds of their 15 overall attempts before halftime.
Two stops from
Dawn DeWeese-Moss and a defensive save by
Gianna Korisianos [CNE 2nd Team] kept things scoreless after the 1st quarter, but Roger Williams edged in front with 75 seconds gone in the 2nd on a corner. Elizabeth Duquette received the insert and fed it into the middle to Maddy Monahan [CNE 1st Team], who turned and pushed one into the upper left side.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as UNE converted on a corner play -- and first shot -- three minutes later (20th minute).
Shelly Tremblay [CNE 1st Team] gathered the insert on the near side and lofted a shot over everyone in front, just inside the far post, for her second goal of the year.
Francesca Caccamo assisted the tally.
The Nor'easters threatened for another out of the gate in the 3rd, with three corners in less than two minutes. But a defensive stop by Stevens and the only save of the afternoon for goalie Jill Haudenshield [CNE 2nd Team] maintained the deadlock.
DeWeese-Moss denied the only two shots in the 4th -- bringing her game total to four saves -- to force overtime.
