EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of New England had the first nine shots on goal and then scored on two of its next three chances in the 1st period to start towards a 3-0 Conference of New England (CNE) men's ice hockey victory against Suffolk University on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Porrazzo Rink.
The Rams actually had more attempts the rest of the way, but
Joey Stanizzi came through with 33 saves to notch his third shutout of the season for the Nor'easters (5-2-0, 4-2-0 CNE). Stanizzi came into the day one off the Division III lead in clean sheets.
Nathan Chickering, and
Nick Marino on the power play, provided the early goals for UNE at 9:50 and 11:36 of the opening frame. Assisting on Marino's tally were
Anthony Sciucco and
Cam Bergeman, who are both producing more than one point per game so far in 2024-25.
Aidan Curran, who missed all of his sophomore campaign last year, deposited his first goal in over 21 months just 90 seconds into the 2nd to cap the scoring.
Bergeman registered a team-high three blocked shots for the Nor'easters, who had 20 total, in support of Stanizzi.
On the opposite end, starting netminder CJ Hapward turned aside 25 shots over 40 minutes of action for Suffolk (3-4-1, 1-4-1).
UNE will now prepare for the Delta by Marriott Thanksgiving Showcase at Utica University starting next Friday. The Nor'easters open with the No.3 Pioneers; the last two times the team met, UNE eliminated Utica from the national quarterfinals on its home ice. The other opening-round matchup features squads narrowly outside of the current USCHO poll, just like UNE, in Stevenson University and SUNY Oswego.
