BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Adria Horton and
Payton Walmsley each won twice to help the University of New England women's swimming team defeat Simmons University, 156-104, at the Campus Center Pool on Saturday (Nov. 16). It was UNE's first victory against the Sharks since 2012.
Horton captured the 100-fly (1:03.99) and the 500-free (5:28.59), while Walmsley was first to the wall in the 50-breast (32.94) and the 100-breast (1:13.55).
Adding to the Nor'easter total with individual wins wereÂ
Annika Doeppers in 1000-free (12:01.47) and
Maeve McDermott in the 100-IM (1:07.22). McDermott finished 0.59 seconds ahead of Walmsley for the top spot.
In the closest race of the day, McDermott was also a narrow runner-up to Simmons' Chaelin Humphrey in the 50-fly (30.33 / 30.71).
UNE hustled to first-place in both relays, as well. In the 200-medley (2:00.73), Horton, Walmsley, McDermott, and
Ari Cioffi combined to win by 1.49 seconds, and then
Eloise Ring, Doeppers,
Tess Zurawski, and Horton posted 4:00.81 in the 400-free relay to edge out the Sharks by a 0.89Â margin.
For Simmons, Carli Quinlan and Camelia Hannah both picked up two events; one of Hannah's results came in the 50-back (30.85), which was only 0.72 ahead of Zurawski. Isabel Barry-Ruiz contributed one win for the visitors in the 200-free (2:12.24), ending up just 0.47 before Ring clocked in for UNE.Â
Next up for the Nor'easters will be the Maine Invitational on December 6-7.
