HOPKINTON, N.H. -- Paced by an all-region effort by
Troy Silvestri, the University of New England finished in 20th place out of 33 programs competing at the 2024 NCAA Division III East Men's Cross Country Championship at Hopkinton Fairgrounds on Saturday (Nov. 16).
No.20 MIT won the region's automatic bid into next week's national championship with a score of 43 that included three runners inside the top 10. No.19 Tufts University came next with 61 points, while WPI (128), Bowdoin College (161), and Bates College (162) rounded out the first five squads. UNE's score ended up at 585.
Jake Velazquez of Keene State College was the leading individual among the 224 competitors, notching an 8K time of 24:35. Will Goddard of Bowdoin (24:41) and Avi Bissoondial of WPI (24:42) were close behind.
For Silvestri, who is in his sophomore campaign, it marked the second time finishing in the initial 35 runners to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors
[formally announced 11/18]. He crossed the line in 25:43, for 26th place.
