KEENE, N.H. --
Adria Horton,
Maeve McDermott, and
Payton Walmsley were the top cumulative performers for the University of New England women's swimming team at the Keene State College Sprint Pentathlon, which opened the 2024-25 season on Saturday (Oct. 12) at Spaulding Pool.
The non-scoring team competition included a 50-yard version of each swimming discipline, plus the 100-individual medley. Among competitors from Norwich University, KSC, Gordon College, and Plymouth State University, McDermott, Horton, and Walmsley finished first (3:11.54), second (3:12.99), and third (3:14.44), respectively, in total time for those five solo swims.
Horton had the leading mark in the 50-fly (28.43) -- more than one second clear of the next fastest -- and was nearly two full seconds better than the field in the 50-backstroke (29.85). Both efforts were personal bests. She also led the Nor'easters with 4th place in the 50-free (26.96), and then took 3rd in the 100-IM (1:08.83).
McDermott's overall best time was highlighted by 1st place in the IM (1:07.85). Prior to that, she was 4th on the 50-fly (29.95), 3rd in the 50-back (31.91), and 3rd in the 50-breast (34.00).
In her collegiate debut, Walmsley paced all swimmers in the 50-breast (32.84), which goes down as the sixth-fastest mark in UNE program records. Additionally, she was 2nd to McDermott in the IM (1:08.00) and took 6th in the 50-free (27.70).
Annika Doeppers finished among the leaders in the 50-breast (35.59), taking 5th place, and
Liv Roux was 6th in the 50-back (32.40).
The meet also had a pair of relay events, and UNE claimed both. In the 200-medley relay, Roux, Walmsley, McDermott, and
Tess Zurawski combined for 2:01.80 to win it. Walmsley,
Ari Cioffi,
Eloise Ring, and Horton later capped the day with a 1:51.21 in the 200-free relay.
The Nor'easters are home against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Friday (6 p.m.) at the Campus Center Pool.
