Strong first half fuels win in home-opener

Scoring Summary

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's rugby team raced out to a 33-7 first-half advantage on its way to a 52-26 victory over the University of Maine in the Nor'easters' home-opener on a windy Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12) at Blue Storm Stadium.

McKenna Len opened the scoring for the Nor'easters right away, tallying a try just 6:12 into the contest (Watch). UNE added to its advantage five minutes later when Hannah Ramalho plowed into the try zone for the first of three scores on the afternoon (Watch).

After Lauren Buley got the Black Bears on the scoreboard to cut their deficit to 12-7 at the 15:23 mark, the Nor'easters closed the frame strong with consecutive tries by Elizabeth Goodrich (Watch), Ramalho (Watch) and Caroline Rhodes (Watch). Liz Cogan was successful on 4 of 5 conversion attempts in the opening 40 minutes, including one from a severe angle to close the first half.

Rae Pesek kept UNE's momentum going coming out of intermission, finding the try zone less than 10 minutes into the second stanza (Watch). The Nor'easters sandwiched tries by Goodrich (Watch) and Ramalho around one from UMaine's Madelyn Tupper to push their lead to 52-14.

The Black Bears would score twice in the final four minutes to close the contest.

Cogan finished the afternoon 6-for-8 on conversion attempts for the Nor'easters, who return to action Oct. 25 when they host National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) rival Bowdoin College.
