BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College scored three times during a six-minute span in the middle of the 3rd period to pull away to a 5-1 women's ice hockey decision versus the University of New England at Watson Arena on Tuesday night (Jan. 23).
After starting the year with six wins in nine outings, the Polar Bears get to .500 at 8-8-2 on the season. The Nor'easters, who return to Commonwealth Coast Conference action next Friday at Suffolk University, slip to 7-9-3 overall.
The home side found the net twice in the 1st frame to get out in front with goals by Anyi Sun (3:38) and Abigail Ainley (11:41). Shots on goal were 12-5 in favor of Bowdoin through 20 minutes; things were a bit more level in the 2nd (12-8) and no scoring advanced the 2-0 margin into the final stanza.
At the 8:16 mark of the 3rd, though, Bella Mele added to the cushion for the Polar Bears, and Brett Stoddard struck at 12:07 to make it 4-0. Following a power-play tally by Jane McCarter, UNE's
Lainie Lemieux did manage to break up the shutout bid with 1:35 left on the clock. It was the third straight game with a goal for Lemieux, who was assisted by
Amanda Forziati.
Between the pipes for Bowdoin, Abby Matusovich and Sarah Peterson practically split time and recorded seven and 12 saves, respectively. On the opposite end for the Nor'easters,
