BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Four different scorers over the first two periods powered No.14 Endicott College in a 4-0 result against the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's ice hockey matchup at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night (Jan. 12).
The teams square off again on Saturday afternoon down in Beverly.
The nationally-ranked Gulls (9-4-2, 6-2-0 CCC) got on the board at the 8:36 mark of the 1st, courtesy of Rivers Morris. A blue-line dump into the corner caromed back in front of the cage, just outside the reach of UNE goalie
Delanie Corcoran, and Morris lifted the stick of a defender to retain control and slip it under the pads.
It appeared that a 13-4 margin in shots during the frame was only going to amount to a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes, but a scramble just outside the crease wound up with Quin Healy lifting one from the right side just under the crossbar with 0.2 on the clock.
Endicott added to the 2-0 cushion 8:20 into the middle session when Jenna Seibold wristed one from the left circle through a screen. Corcoran was again screened less than five minutes later, as Payton Hansen held the blue line along the left wall with a one-timer slap that grazed the right post before hitting the net.
Morris and Healy both assisted on the final tally for a second point on the evening; Samantha Fantasia contributed two assists for the visitors, who finished with a 39-23 advantage in shots.
Casey Moritz turned in 23 stops for the Gulls, including a point-blank save with a two-goal lead early in the 2nd. Corcoran denied 35 attempts on the opposite side for UNE (5-7-3, 4-2-3).
