Three-goal 2nd period fuels UNE's 4-2 win over Suffolk

EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- University of New England scored three second-period goals to break open a scoreless contest on its way to a 4-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's ice hockey win over Suffolk University Friday evening (Jan. 12) at Porrazzo Rink.

The Nor'easters, ranked ninth in the most recent United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll, extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games while upping their record to 11-2-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference play. Suffolk fell to 2-12-2 (1-7-1 CCC).

After a scoreless first period, UNE broke things open with goals from Brock Paul, Dylan Schuett and Anthony Sciucco in the middle frame. Paul's opening tally of the game came at 3:23 of the period and was assisted by Dominic Murphy and Logan DiScanio. Schuett would double the UNE lead four minutes later, with help from Paul and Will Spitzer. Sciucco's goal came on the power play and was set up by Jayden Price and Juraj Elias.

The Rams would make a game of it in the third, tallying a pair of power-play goals (Gavin Havens, Jake Grace) in a span of 1:16 midway through the period. 

Suffolk pulled goaltender CJ Hapward in the final minute, but Sciucco notched an empty-netter to clinch the win for UNE.

Goalie Joe Stanizzi turned aside 21 shots for improve his record to 4-0-0 for the Nor'easters, who held a 39-23 lead in shots on goal. Hapward finished with 35 stops for Suffolk.

The Nor'easters are idle until next Tuesday (Jan. 16) when they host Bowdoin College for a non-conference tilt. Puck drop at the Harold Alfond Forum is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
